the worst may be yet to come. the severe weather threats for today. taking the stand. adult film star stormy daniels dishes out salacious details about her alleged sexual encounter with former president donald trump. and weapons withheld. the u.s.' concerns that halted a shipment of heavy bombs to israel. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with severe weather battering the midwest. tornadoes ripped through the city of portage near kalamazoo, michigan, ripping apart this fedex facility. some 50 employees were said to have been trapped inside at the time but have since been rescued. the twisters there destroying houses and knocking out power to more than 20,000 people. at least a dozen residents of a mobile home park were injured. >> my windows being blown out of my apartment. and i'm like down underneath the mattress, everything went black.

and then it was light again. came out, my apartment's flooded. >> residents taking matters into their own hands in decatur, michigan, coming out with chainsaws to clear the roads blocked by downed trees. today's severe weather threat covers a large area from texas to indiana to north carolina with nashville among the cities in danger. storms later today could produce more tornadoes and hail that could be as large as baseballs. and now to the explosive testimony in former president donald trump's so-called hush-money trial. former adult film star stormy daniels gave very detailed testimony about her alleged sexual encounter with trump nearly two decades ago. cbs' jarred hill joins us now here in new york with how the day unfolded. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so stormy daniels' day on the witness stand has been described as graphic, as intense. at one point the judge warned former president trump's lawyers

that their client was cursing audibly and should stop. >> a very revealing day. >> reporter: former president donald trump due back in court tomorrow for day two of potentially explosive testimony from adult film star stormy daniels in his manhattan criminal case. under oath on the witness stand yesterday, daniels recalled the details of their alleged 2006 sexual encounter which trump has denied. daniels testified that trump invited her to his hotel suite in lake tahoe. she said she asked trump about his wife melania and he said, quote, don't worry about it. we actually don't sleep in the same room. daniels also said she wanted to share her story ten years later but was afraid, adding that she took the $130,000 payment from trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, to stay quiet. >> everything in this case is designed to get to michael cohen's testimony. he is really the only person that we know of who could give direct evidence about donald trump's involvement. >> reporter: in cross-examination, trump's

lawyers questioned daniels' motives, asking if she hates the former president to which she responded, "yes." they asked if she wants trump to goto jail. her response -- "if he's found guilty, absolutely." >> this whole case is just a disaster. >> reporter: trump seemed visibly frustrated during daniels' testimony which drew multiple objections from his lawyers. the defense asked for a mistrial accusing prosecutors of trying to embarrass the former president. the judge denied the motion but acknowledged, quote, there were some things that are probably better left unsaid. >> so there was also new developments in trump's classified documents case, that's the one coming out of florida. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: yes, so that trial was supposed to start actually later on this month, but it is now on hold indefinitely based on a decision by the judge that she said that there were too mny pretrial legal issues and motions to consider, and based on the schedule that she laid out yesterday a trial couldn't happen now before the end of

july. remember, special counsel jack smith is alleging here that trump mishandled numerous documents with classified markings and worked with his aides to obstruct the resulting federal probe into those documents. all this potentially could mean that the current case we're seeing now happening in manhattan might be the only one that the former president faces in trial before the election in november. >> jarred hill in new york, thank you. cbs news has learned the biden administration postponed a shipment of weapons to israel last week fearing it could be used on the southern gaza city of rafah. a senior administration official says the shipment was to include both 2,000 and 500-pound bombs, but the concern was the impact the larger explosives could have on the dense urban setting where more than a million palestinians are sheltering. plumes of smoke could be seen rising above northern gaza this morning as israel announces the reopening of a key crossing for aid that was closed following

hamas' rocket attack that killed four soldiers. and cia director bill burns is set to travel to israel today for pivotal talks with prime minister benjamin netahyahu about the ongoing cease-fire and hostage negotiations. ramy inocencio reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: flattening this "i love gaza" welcome sign, israeli tanks took control of the palestinian side of the rafah crossing. along with kerem shalom to the east, two of gaza's most important corridors for aid are now shut. prime minister benjamin netanyahu stressed hamas' proposal is very far from israel's core demands. but more pressure from hostage families for a deal. they're chanting the names of every hostage followed by "now, now, now." the fear here is that if the government doesn't approve the cease-fire soon, that an invasion will follow. >> my dear son, as your mother i

will never give up on you. i will do whatever i can to bring you back home. >> reporter: protest leader einav zangauker says her 24-year-old son matan is still a hostage because netanyahu is opposed to a permanent cease-fire. >> my prime minister is not thinking about the israeli citizens. he's thinking only about his political survival. >> reporter: many in israel believe there should be no deal with hamas, like far right ultranationalist politician yitzhak kroizer, part of prime minister benjamin netanyahu's fragile coalition. [ speaking in a global language ] he says instead of sending negotiators for talks the military should come down on gaza to bring hostages home. and as cease-fire talks carry on in cairo, the pentagon says it has finished building the floating pier. weather permitting it will be connected to the gaza shore. ramy inocencio, cbs news, tel aviv.

the war in gaza has divided the country with president biden caught between supporting israel's military campaign and angry demonstrations against it. yesterday he sent a strong message about the rise of anti-semitism. ed o'keefe reports from the white house. we've seen a ferocious surge of anti-semitism in america and around the world. >> reporter: after weeks of protests up-ending college campuses, president biden again condemned anti-semitism and said he fears widely accepted behaviors that led to the holocaust are reemerging. >> hamas unleashed this terror. it was hamas that brutalized israelis. it was hamas that took and continues to hold hostages. i have not forgotten, nor have you, and we will not forget. [ applause ] >> reporter: the president has struggled to balance his support for israel's ongoing military campaign against hamas with growing public anger over the humanitarian crisis in gaza. polls show growing disapproval of his handling of the conflict,

but among college students, recent polls show the conflict in the middle east ranks lower than concerns about health care, education, the economy, and civil rights. in his speech, the president called out what's been happening on campuses. >> there is no place on any campus in america, any place in america for anti-semitism or hate speech or threats of violence of any kind. [ applause ] [ chants ] >> reporter: with jewish groups pressuring the white house to do more on anti-semitism, the education department today sent new guidelines to every school and college designed to ensure the safety of jewish students. the president didn't criticize israel's military advances further into gaza or mention humanitarian conditions there. a major concern of protesters. are there any plans for him to give similar remarks about the plight of palestinian civilians or islamaphobia? >> the president has spoken about what happened in gaza. the loss of lives is unacceptable. >> reporter: ed o'keefe cbs news, the white house.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the baltimore sun" reports the body of the sixth and final victim of the baltimore bridge collapse has been recovered. authorities found the body of 37-year-old jose mynor lopez yesterday. he was among the construction workers on the francis scott key bridge when a massive cargo ship slammed into it causing it to collapse. an investigation into the march incident is still ongoing. lopez's family says that he will be buried in guatemala. he leaves behind four children. "the toronto star" says drake's security guard was shot outside the rapper's toronto mansion, suffering life-threatening injuries. authorities say the victim was rushed to the hospital after the shooting early yesterday morning. investigators say they have little information and are studying surveillance video. the incident comes as drake is sparring publicly with california rapper kendrick lamar in a series of so-called dis tracks. there is no evidence lamar is linked to the shooting, though. and "the dallas morning

attend monday night's met gala. images of the pop stars surfaced on line, though, good enough to trick plenty of fans including perry's own mother. perry shared the deep fake photos on instagram including a screen shot of a text exchange with her mom who fell for the ai photos. some eagle-eyed social media users noticed the carpeting was from the 2018 event. prince harry is in london but will not get to see his father, king charles. the duke of sussex is there for the tenth anniversary of the invictus games. a spokesperson for the prince said he will not see his father due to the king's busy schedule. harry last saw her father in february after his cancer diagnosis. we'll be right back.
