the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. a handful of tornados tear through the area tonight. a series of storms creating funnel clouds and tornados throughout eastern iowa -- this video was sent to us from a viewer near parkersburg, with a funnel forming above butler county. another video coming to us -- this one out of grundy center -- shows a slim funnel cloud slowly spinning near a neighborhood. storm track seven's jessica hartman was in parkersburg for the storms. she joins us live outside in downtown waterloo -- where the weather has calmed tonight. it may not be the traditional tornado season --- but as we an unseasonablely

starting in radcliffe in hardin county with this tornado causing some damage -- trees down -a pick up truck on its side. andrea thompson "i was pretty darn scared i think. i was home by myself, with all the there, but just panicking, thinking, i gotta make sure theyre all down here because i think the front door might have been still been cracked open. we were just out looking at hail, i mean, its the coolest thing that hail -- wind - and rain continuing on to eastern iowa. parkersburg-- a town all too familar with the destruction of tornados -- held its breath as this funnel cloud passed through town. this time leaving only hail -- this shed blown off its foundation and a

"i was going to class and just saw people running and was nervous." it was originally reported as an active shooter situation. but witnesses say a

that's when a car jumped the sidewalk and plowed people with their car, hitting people with the car." police say the man got out of the car and attacked bystanders with a butcher knife. "we heard the chaos. shouts screams, shots. that kind of thing. " an officer confronted the attacker. then shot and killed him. "we believe the threat was ended when the officer engaged the suspect and eliminated the threat." law enforcement sources tell nbc news the attacker was an 18- year-old somali living in the u-s legally. a student at ohio state named abdul razak ali artan. police were seen searching a home not far from campus. they believe the attack was intentional. now they're trying to figure out why. one clue might be this facebook rant federal officials say artan posted shortly before the around the world -- quote -- (chief craig stone - ohio state police) "this was done on purpose. to go over the curb and strike pedestrians and to get out and strat striking him with a knife, wounds might take longer to heal.

the oil recycling business burned for several hours before it was able to be controlled -- even injuring a fire fighter. that fire fighter has since returned home and is still recovering. tonight -- an investigator says the fire will most likely be officially listed as undetermined, due to the destruction the fire caused. they also say the fire started in a west building before igniting the rest of the facility. an area university's search for its next leader is entering the final stages -- with the first finalist named. neil theo-bald served as presiden 12 until august of this year. he'll spend the day on campus tomorrow. there are three finalists -- each will visit campus this week. a fourth candidate dropped out. following the visits -- the board of regents is set to meet next week to

an auditor has taken a look at the flight log of a university president who has come under fire for his personal use of school planes. iowa state university president steven leath is currently under an audit by the board of regents following a damaging hard landing of an i-s-u plane following a vacation. leath initially didn't believe the log was public record -- but later provided the log for review. the hard crash happened in illinois in july 20-15. their search tonight for two missing boaters on the mississippi river. searches have been ongoing since saturday for the missing boaters -- police say they are tyler steeg and keegan rasmussen. both are from clinton. a barge crew recovered an empty boat along the river over the weekend. in a kwwl follow-up -- as many in the country continue to

one cedar rapids man feels a deep personal connection. he says his grandfather had to flee cuba for his safety once castro rose to power before other family members soon followed. kwwl's jalyn souchek reports tonight. in cuba many mourning the death of its leader fidel castro -- dead at 90 years old great pain "it was a sense of celebration. a sense that a chapter for families, mine included, has passed away." jason streit helps run the lost cuban restaurant in cedar the lost cuban restaurant in cedar rapids with his brother apart of the counter revolution -- having to flee cuba as castro rose to power everyday life soon became harder for the remaining family "they lost businesses, homes, they lost property and so it just became not feasibly for them to stay there anymore." his family first fleeing to venezuela where his mother was born before coming to the united states "they came here to work

snowfall stick to the ground here in eastern iowa... some places are getting hit hard seven inches now in north dakota...and no signs of stopping the storm bringing flurries, freezing rain, and wind. many people out cleaning sidewalks and plowing walkways... emergency crews oud clear the roads for drivers that storm is expected to stay over north dakots until the middle of the week emergency crews out west -- dealing with the opposite problem, as they battle a brush fire. this happening in colorado -- where large flames are visible from above a denver area mountain and quickly growing tonight. the fire is widespread -- fire crews say it has grown 300 acres after starting earlier today. evacuations are in order for

meanwhile -- another fire burning near great smoky mountains national park in tennessee has forced more mandatory evacuations. take a look -- the fire turning the sky orange near downtown gatlinburg. that fire has spread to 500 acres tonight. fire officials there say arson is possible as the cause of the fire -- which sparked over the weekend. coming up on kwwl... an officer is thrust into rescue mode -- as he pulls a

credited with saving a man's life. the officer pulled the man -- from a burning car. the officer's show of bravery came the day before thanksgiving in new jersey -- when he ran straight toward this burning car the 63- apparent medical problem and crashed his chevy sedan into another car in a parking lot. both cars burst into flames -- and the accelerator jammed. officer adam brownlee managed to get the car stopped and get the man to safety. "it was definitely heroic. it was something he didn't have to do. he put this individual first." his co-workers also say detective brownlee is set to retire in just a few weeks. the city plans to honor him with a lifesaving award.

that's pulled from the bottom of a lake. look at crews trying to break into the car. this happening in madison wisconsin - investigators getting a call from someone who found the car early this morning. it's too early to tell for sure, but it's believed the car went into the water from the boat ram. police are looking for a man who they say stole a backhoe, then drove it the wrong way down a -- killing a woman. the backhoe stolen from dallas texas about an hour before the crash. wtinesses say the man jumped out of the backhoe from his seat in the middle of the freeway and ran across the median - leaving the tractor in the road. two construction workers pulled over and moved the backhoe off the freeway to keep other drivers from hitting it. a woman is shot and killed on a hunting trip... police now trying to figure out how it happened.

a group of hunters were gathered in what is a very popular spot for hunters... those on scene say it happened in a relatively open field. the woman, was shot there and died at the hospital. new york's environmental officers say this is the third season. coming up next... we'll hear from the hawkeye women's basketball team as they prepare to be giant killers with top ranked notre dame coming to town -- plus -- uni's bobbi petersen weighs in following the uni volleyball team's selection to the ncaa tourname rick coleman joins us next on

headed back to the ncaa tournament -- the panthers picked up an at- large bid for the second straight season -- and will head to lawrence, kansas on thursday to the appearance will be the 20th in heading to the big dance -- which is especially impressive considering they began the season 6 and 5 and lost 3 out of their first 4 conference games -- but coach bobbi petersen says her team never gave up -- and now they're being rewarded for there and still get better every day cause for us that's the biggest part of it. you have to be getting better every day. you have to have to have a focus and to be playing your best at

the season with the blue jays winning in straight sets -- thursday's game gets going at four oh clock -- the iowa women's basketball team will get a chance to be giant killers when top ranked notre -- with a young team -- the hawkeyes have dropped two of their last three games going in to a game against a team that's outscored opponents by 30 points per game -- but lisa bluder expects the hawks to be loose going in to a game wh game we have absolutely no pressure. we're going to use this game, you know upsets and practice is excited to get the opportunity to take down number one on our home court. home court advantage and i think our energy will help us out. iowa is oh and two all time against the irish -- wednesday night's game
